California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf was one of the most prominent American rabbis of his day. Noted for his dynamic preaching and his firm stance on social justice, Krauskopf was a very well-known figure in the Jewish community. Krauskopf was born in Ostrowo, Poland in 1858, and came to Fall River, Massachusetts in 1862.
